On April 25th, 2025, SAAPRI hosted Breast Cancer in the South Asian American Community event in Skokie. This evening marked a major milestone for SAAPRI. This report brought together years of research, education, and community dialogue in one powerful space for connection and learning.
We launched our newest report, Breaking Barriers: Unpacking Breast Cancer Challenges & Triumphs for South Asian Americans— authored, presented, and moderated by SAAPRI Fellow Prottusha Sarkar. The program featured a dynamic panel and roundtable discussion, highlighting the critical gaps in breast cancer awareness, culturally responsive care, and data for South Asian Americans.
We were proud to be joined by:
Rep. Nabeela Syed (IL-51)
Rep. Kevin Olickal (IL-16)
Dr. Maura Quinlan – Illinois Dept. of Public Health
Anita Banerji – Breast cancer survivor and advocate
Dr. Priyanka Gokhale – UIC Dept. of Obstetrics & Gynecology
This work wouldn’t be possible without the support of community members like you. We’re excited to keep the momentum going and continue advocating for inclusive data, better resources, and care that truly reflects our communities.
