Description
On April 10, SAAPRI and SAAJCO hosted a critical conversation on civil rights, immigration policies, and community protections in this new political landscape. Experts and advocates broke down the changes, provided key insights, and shared actionable steps to stay informed and engaged. This was the first session in our Engaged Communities Series, a year-long initiative focused on empowering our communities with knowledge and tools to advocate for their rights.
This program critically examined the first months of the 2nd Trump presidency, focusing on the executive orders issued during this period and their real-world implications for South Asian immigrants in the United States. We unpacked these policies, analyzed their immediate and long-term effects, and explored the legal challenges that have been or can be brought in response. Through this discussion, we aimed to provide clarity on what these changes mean for immigrant communities and how legal strategies are shaping the fight ahead.
Unpacking the Executive Orders
- Broke down the major immigration-related executive actions—what they say, what they do, and who they impact.
Real-World Impacts on South Asian Communities
- Examined how these policy shifts affect South Asian visa holders, permanent residents, asylum seekers, and undocumented individuals, as well as broader community dynamics.
Legal Challenges and Litigation Strategies
- Analyzed the lawsuits and legal challenges that have been filed or could be pursued to push back against restrictive immigration measures.
