South Asian American Community Health Forum: Diabetes Panel

South Asian American Community Health Forum: Diabetes Panel

On April 27th, 2023, SAAPRI hosted a Facebook Live discussion on diabetes within the South Asian American community and the challenges members face – in conversation with the Network of National Library of Medicine‘s diabetes documentary, “Curing Diabetes: the Human Trial”. Our discussion featured two experts in the field, Dr. Manasi Jayaprakash and Dr. Atif Hassan.

South Asian Americans have one of the highest diabetes prevalence rates of any demographic group in the United States, second only to Native Americans. South Asia alone is projected to have the greatest burden of diabetes globally by 2030. However, traditional risk factors for type II diabetes do not explain these trends, and diabetes in South Asian Americans in Illinois compared to those observed in the literature is still relatively understudied. Everything we know points to the fact that we need more research and advocacy for diabetes in our community.
