On October 6th, 2018, SAAPRI collaborated with the Indo-American Center (IAC), Hamdard Center, and Chicago Desi Youth Rising to host “The Future of South Asians in the U.S.”
Participants met with several local organizations at a resource fair who work in the fields of immigration, health care, public benefits, DACA, and more. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky also joined the forum to meet with the South Asian community.
There was also a panel discussion with local advocates of the South Asian community who shared about current U.S. and Illinois policies affecting South Asian communities, H4 visas, DACA, and the DREAM Act and how to support South Asians in the U.S. Panelists included Dhara Puvar, Executive Director of SAAPRI, Anar Parikh, Civic Engagement Program Coordinator at the Indo-American Center (IAC), Chirayu Patel, Advocate and DREAMer, and Himabindu Poroori of Chicago Desi Youth Rising (CDYR).
Lastly, there was a workshop to share information about the 2020 Census and how it will affect South Asians in the U.S.
