On October 11th, 2022, SAAPRI and the UIC Asian American Resource and Cultural Center, the UIC Arab American Cultural Center, and the UIC Women’s Leadership and Resource Center hosted a discussion Disney+’s limited series Ms. Marvel, which starred a South Asian Muslim woman playing a South Asian Muslim character who gains super powers — the first such lead actor and role in American broadcast history. We discussed the importance of visibility and recognition of AAPI communities in a time of rampant abuse, misinformation, and violence.
