Our Stories: Teaching Asian American History in Illinois

Our Stories: Teaching Asian American History in Illinois

On May 4th, 2022, SAAPRI hosted a virtual zoom event centered on discussions about teaching Asian American history in Illinois.

In July 2021, Illinois became the first state to mandate the Teaching Equitable Asian American Community History (TEAACH) Act, which requires the teaching of a unit of Asian-American history in public elementary and high schools starting in the 2022-23 school year.

As a longtime advocate and a proud supporter of the TEAACH Act, SAAPRI kicked off Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month by bringing together Senator Ram Villivalam, Senate sponsor of this legislation, and other experts in South Asian American History who discussed why South Asian American histories matter and why our stories need to be shared.

Thank you to all those who attended our event!
