Our Stories – Teaching Asian American History in Illinois

In July 2021, Illinois became the first state to mandate the Teaching Equitable Asian American Community History (TEAACH) Act, which requires the teaching of a unit of Asian-American history in public elementary and high schools starting in the 2022-23 school year.

As a longtime advocate and a proud supporter of the TEAACH Act, SAAPRI is kicking off Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month by bringing to you Senator Ram Villivalam, Senate sponsor of this legislation, and other experts in South Asian American History who will discuss why South Asian American histories matter and why our stories need to be shared.

We will be holding this conversation on this upcoming Wednesday, May 4th from 6:00-7:00 PM CST. This will be a virtual zoom event, please RSVP using the link below. The zoom link will be sent to you shortly before the event. We look forward to virtually seeing all of you at the forum!
