South Asian Community Asset Map for Illinois

Welcome to the SAAPRI South Asian Community Asset Map for Illinois.

SAAPRI is pleased to provide this map of South Asian-serving institutions in Illinois as a resource for the community, published in February 2015 in conjunction with the report “Voter Registration, Activation, and Engagement in South Asian American Communities in Illinois.”

SAAPRI thanks former Civic Engagement Fellow Harish Patel for creating this valuable resource and former volunteer Kunal Gokhale for all his valuable assistance.

The South Asian Community Asset Map lays out the different local South Asian-serving institutions and organizations (“community assets”). This includes Student, Faith-based, Cultural, Media, Professional, Advocacy, Arts, and Direct Service organizations. The map also includes different political boundaries and layers of South Asian demographics data. The purpose of this map is to visually represent the South Asian American community and its resources, make it easier to learn about and use the resources and networks that are available in the community, and to encourage new connections in the area of arts, culture, social services, and civic engagement within the South Asian American ecosystem.

How to Navigate the Community Asset Map

The Map includes two main features: Community Assets and South Asian demographic data.

  • Community Assets are represented as pins and are color-coded by type of organization. Click on a pin to open the profile of one of the Community Assets. Each profile includes a description of the organization and contact information (with some also including the types of services offered).
  • The Map includes South Asian demographic data for the 6 Chicago area counties (Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will). This County layer is the default political boundary overlaid on the map with the Community Assets. Click on the space inside a given County to open the data profile of that County. Each profile includes data for total South Asian population, population by South Asian country, and population growth of each population since 2000.

The Community Asset Map also includes boundaries for Illinois State House and Senate Districts and Chicago Wards and Neighborhoods. To access and overlay all the different layers on the map, click on the icon on the top-left corner of the map, left of the “SAAPRI Community Asset Map” title. This will open a panel showing all the available layers that can be added or removed from the map. The layers include both the political boundaries and the Community Asset layer. To add a layer onto the map, click on the checkbox next to the layer. To remove a layer from the map, click on the checkbox again. Currently, only the County layer includes South Asian demographic data. We plan to add and update data for all layers as they become available.
