On October 17th, 2024, SAAPRI partnered with the Field Museum to bring its Oral History exhibit to help Pre-K-12 educators explore effective strategies for teaching Asian American history and fostering an inclusive classroom environment.
Since the enactment of the TEAACH Act in Illinois, history educators have been engaging in self-education and participating in professional development events to enhance their understanding of historical narratives often overlooked in mainstream curricula. The SAAPRI exhibit “Memories and Milestones” showcased the journey of South Asians who came to Illinois between 1945 and 1965. We have not only documented but eagerly shared about the history of South Asian immigration to Illinois in the pre-civil rights era and how they were affected by issues of race, gender, and homeland politics.
